Connector #Appy Hour
by Dave Dungan on July 2nd, 2010
Thanks a million to everyone who came along to the Connector #Appy Hour event last night at the Nokia Pop Up Shop on Grafton Street. Congratulations to Suzanne Sheridan and Ger Canning who were the worthy winners of our competition on the night and proud owners of two spanking new Nokia phones! (Facebook Photos)
There were some great speakers in Anthony Lawless, Device and Software Manager at Nokia, and Edward Conmy, joint owner of Digital Times and winner of the Appys Awards.
They talked about digital innovation in terms of new mobile phone applications and how useful they are to create content for the computing, media, publishing and advertising industries.
After the talks, there was a raffle with amazing prices to win from Nokia, Abbey Theatre, The New Theatre, Lighthouse Smithfield Cinema and Millets Camping.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the event and make new connections and friends. Although the guest speakers were very popular they didn’t quite go down as well as the free refreshments! Hope to see everyone at the next one!

Connector Christmas Awards 2009 @ Lillies Bordello
by Conor on December 13th, 2009
Last night Connector presented the Connector of the Year Awards at Lillie’s Bordello at our second annual Christmas Party. We wanted to applaud the great work of Dublin tribes / online communities plus a guy and a girl who have done really well in the last year.
The prizes were presented by TV Presenter Michael Hayes & each winner received a framed certificate and a brand new mobile phone kindly sponsored by Nokia, Sony Ericsson & 3 Mobile.
The winners for ‘Tribe of the Year’ was Culch.ie, a community formed by Darren Byrne (pictured below). He has rounded up team of talented volunteer bloggers who write about all things pop culture & attend many arts & cultural events around Ireland.
In the Connector Male category David Mooney was the winner for his amazing work with Funky Seomra while the Connector Female award went to Natalia Kostrzewa, who couldn’t attend as she was out of the country.
Besides that, we have made some predictions for the Top 10 to watch in 2010. Have a look to their names (in slideshare below) and keep an eye on them, they’re doing interesting work and we wish them all the best in 2010!
Approximately 170 people came to the event & we raised approx. €850 TBC for Temple Street Children’s Hospital so thanks for all donations. The event was kindly sponsored by Peroni & RealexPayments and thanks also to Applied Signs & Display.
We were entertained & enjoyed a fantastic night where we had Apollina tribal belly dancer and also comedy performances from Will Lynch, Ronan Grace, Paudy Byrne & Mark Hanratty.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the Connector team who helped organise this and all the events during 2009.
Nokia connects with Amhran na Bhfiann !
by Conor on September 18th, 2009

With the All Ireland Football Final on Sunday, this is the time when it can get embarrassing that you don’t know the National Anthem in English, let alone in Irish! Are you one of the many people who stand in the crowd at sports events, miming the Nation’s favorite song because you don’t know the words – Olé Olé is not the National Anthem!
Nokia in conjunction with Gaelchultúr have launched an application where you can learn the words of the National Anthem on your Nokia handset. Logon to store.ovi.com to download this Karaoke style application for free! You can now learn the National Anthem in a fun, funky way with friends and family. The application will teach you the words line by line, by following the highlighted Irish text, while the English translation is featured underneath.
There are lots of ways to access “Amhran na Bhfiann” for free. If your handset is preloaded with the Ovi store application already on your Nokia device, click on it, go to applications and download “Amhran na Bhfiann.” Don’t worry if you don’t have OVI store on your phone, just go to the download folder, refresh the content and you will find the Ovi store application, download and install onto your device. You are now ready to start singing!
As my mother is from Macroom, I have to nail my colours to the mast and shout “Come on the rebels” !!

Don Mullan connects with the 'Baby of the Titanic'
by Conor on June 7th, 2009
A Tribute to Millvina Dean
Born 2 February 1912 who died 31 May 2009, aged 97
by Don Mullan
Don Mullan travelled the world with his Nokia N95 video/camera phone and photographed & interviewed world famous and some not so famous people he met along the way. His photos and stories are amazing and I met him recently at a Nokia exhibition of some of his mobile photos in Dublin. Below he interviews Millvina Dean, who until recently was the last survivor of the Titanic.
“I first met Millvina Dean (The baby of the Titanic) at a HMS Titanic Convention in Southampton in 1997 with my children. It was my eldest daughter Therese’s fascination with the James Cameron’s movie ‘Titanic’ that brought us there. From the moment we met Millvina, there was an instant friendship.
In recent years Millvina asked me to help her write her memoir. With the assistance of Therese we had travelled back and forth from Dublin to Southampton over the past two years, sometimes alone, sometimes together. Sadly, our project was not complete when Millvina passed away.
What we loved about Millvina was her sense of fun and childlike nature. She was an intelligent woman, alert, articulate and fiercely independent. We loved spending time with her for she had a great gift of making people she met feel
special and loved. In answer to our question, “What is the secret of your happiness” she answer, “You need only two things. A sense of humour and a kind heart.”
Millvina loved reading and gardening and spoke with great affection about the little birds that visited the feeding trays she had constructed in her front and back gardens.
Following an accident in 1995 she was moved to a nursing home. Her bedroom there was filled with things that were important to her: photographs of Titanic related trips she took abroad with her faithful companion Bruno; fresh flowers brought by her many friends; two cuckoo clocks; bundles of fan mail from around the world; and a wonderful collection of teddies, cloth dolls and toy animals.
One day she took great delight in showing Therese and me two little singing puppies who performed ‘I’ve Got You Babe’. She called them ‘Sonny and Cher’ after the American singing duo who had a number-one hit with the song in 1965. Her obvious delight and innocence was such I immediately began to record the moment on my Nokia N95 mobile phone.
I dedicate this video to everyone who knew and loved Millvina. I hope it brings a sparkle to their eyes and warmth to their heart. I also hope that those seeing this for the first time will come to understand why Millvina Dean was so loved and revered by those who knew her. Millvina died an old and fulfilled woman but she retained, right until the end, a young spirit with the most beautiful childlike nature.
Please enjoy this treasured memory of Millvina Dean. It is my hope that in the months and years ahead we will begin to create a life-giving memorial to the baby of the Titanic, supporting the valiant work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. There could be no greater way of keeping Millvina’s spirit alive.
God Bless You Millvina Dean. All who knew and loved you are filled with gratitude for the privilege of encountering your life. And we are especially grateful to your dear father Bertram who sacrificed his own life to save you, your brother Vere, and your dear mother Georgette. “
Connect with Take That !
by Conor on May 20th, 2009
One of my clients at Eighty:Twenty is the great guys over at Nokia (who like connecting people too of course!). They have launched a new competition for Take That fans which is available now for you and friends to enter.
You and 9 of your friends could get to see Take That in the flesh on the 13th June in Croke Park on their biggest tour to date. You and your loyal Superfans side-kicks will be transported by chauffeur driven car to a drinks reception where you be will served champagne and cocktails (so for this one you have to be over 18). You will then be brought to your own “Girls Room” VIP Hospitality area where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the gig.
Another Irish connection is that we are using Dublin based MUZU.tv to create a video playlist for Take That fans. You can buy music via these videos or enter the competition with lots of free tracks to win in the Nokia Music Store. So go on and Take That and join the Irish community of Take That fans !
There is also a contest with Spin FM and the winner of a winnebago is in this video – what a cool prize !
Nokia – Connecting People
by connector on April 22nd, 2009
Ok, so Nokia started connecting people first … I give that to them ;-0
However, I must also say they put on a good event too and one such event was on this evening in Gallery One in Dublin. It was to launch the world’s first mobile phone photography exhibition featuring the inspirational photos of Don Mullan all taken with his Nokia phone. The exhibition was opened by the FAI CEO John Delaney who generously gave a ticket to the Ireland v Italy World Cup match in October to everyone in the audience … what a great result !!
Well done to Aoife & the Nokia team for such as well organised and attended event. The photos are on view to at the Gallery One until the 28th April & I helped promote the event on Pix.ie (with Marcus MacInnes in attendance tonight too) & Facebook with Eighty:Twenty. I am pictured with Don & Aoife & some of the amazing mobile phone photos.
