Connector at the Dublin Web Summit 2010

by Mark Galvin on July 5th, 2010

Hundreds of social media and technology fans were at the ambient and stylish chartered accountants institute last Thursday for the Dublin web summit to hear insights, tips and predictions from top technology enthusiasts and business luminaries. Guests were treated to a 7-hour marathon of insightful speeches from not only Irish but also global presenters.

Dublin Web Summit

Hoping to become more savvy on social media and technology, I doubt they were disappointed! Looking at the line up for the speeches, I was undoubtedly impressed. Big hitters such as Michael Birch founder of Bebo, Mike Butcher Editor of TechCrunch Europe, Simon Cook CEO of DFJ Espirit, the worlds largest venture capital group, The charismatic Bill Liao an Australian tech entrepreneur and ex RTE political correspondent Mark Little, to name a few, all played their part in ensuring a high calibre and standard of presentations.

The event ran extremely smoothly and was well organised with a networking session taking place half way through the speeches to allow not only the members of the audience to indulge in a the eloquent food and drinks that were provided as a half time refresher but also to talk amongst themselves and offer their insights on not only the speeches but also how they could help and compliment each others services. All in all, the event was a huge success and a credit to everyone involved. The web summit was a great chance to see first hand how huge and paramount social media and online relations are becoming in Ireland and long may it continue.

Don't connect with musicians

by connector on June 25th, 2008

Here is an article today from the Irish Independent article by Rhodri Marsden on Facebook & social networking.

I thought it had all been said before but no, apparently some of you out there are stressing & confused about the rules ?!! Yes, a “recent survey ” (unnamed of course) revealed that almost two thirds of people using social networking websites feel frustrated and confused by the unwritten etiquette.”

Well at least the crumbling economy in Ireland has been taken off our minds for a while ! We are given some ‘Friend Warnings’ …. as we are warned that “No group of people are as eager to seize the chance to relentlessly pester people as musicians.”

It goes on … “Anyone possessing a guitar will have three times the number of friends as anyone else, none of whom will have expected the torrent of useless information that’s now hurtling in their direction.”

The article is a summary of a dubious book by Debrett’s, the publisher offering advice on “international etiquette, manners, good taste, style and sophistication,” then leapt to our aid, issuing a number of rules on how to behave online. What a waste of time writing this book but the reviewing it does make for an interesting subject line !

Connect with Green students

by connector on June 4th, 2008

I was talking to the ECO-UNESCO team at a recent Green event in the RDS and I was telling them about Bebo & YouTube and how they should use web video & social networking to connect with young Green students around Ireland.

Elaine Nevin, ECO-UNESCO Director, listened & fair play to her as now we have 40 videos going live online from their annual awards in the Mansion House, featuring RTE’s Aidan Power.

This was arranged by connector.ie with help from Progressive Productions in Ranelagh. Thanks also to Fernanda & her team who were very helpful. l will report back soon on some stats and how well these videos perform in terms of YouTube views. Some brand or company should sponsor this next year … it’s a fantastic event.
