Connector Halloween Roundup

by Emma Greene on November 5th, 2009

It was a spooky October night in Purty Kitchen Temple Bar. People came to the door some in costume some not, but all eager to meet new people and make connections.

The room was decked out to the full with lanterns, balloons and cobwebs. Not only was it full with decorations but also some delicious treats supplied by one of the nights sponsors Marks & Spencers. These lovely treats were washed down happily with an ice cold Bulmers Light another one of our very generous sponsors. Purty Kitchen also donated platters of delicious food on the night.

One of the main attractions of the night was Facebooth “Video Booths for Every Occasion” the attendees were able to leave a video comment on their experience of the night. It was highly successful. This was the first time Facebooth has appeared in Ireland and it was quite the achievement getting them here.

Entertainment on the night, besides the DJ was the up and coming comedian Marcus O’ Laoira who has only been on the comedy seen since June of this year. Marcus has appeared in comedy festivals such as Kilkenny Cat Laughs and the Bulmers Comedy Festival. Other than tonight’s gig he will be appearing in six others. The crowd loved him and his energy, he preformed a music comedy and was ably supported by Greg Marks.

Overall it was a fantastic night, looking forward to next years already!  Thanks to Jason & BTW for coming down and making it such a goodnight of connections – Conor & Jason are pictured about &  more pix here >>

As the crowds began to gather at the door of The Pod, Harcourt Street, they were greeted with a smile and the much appreciated ‘Free Drink Pass’ valid for one ice cold bottle of Heineken, the nights main sponsors. After a few drinks and a chat with fellow music lovers, next on the agenda was speakers from all aspects of music.

The event, which was kindly sponsored by Heineken, kicked off with talks from guest speakers such as Today FMs Alison Curtis, Pod Promotions Siobhan O’Dowd, Phantom FMs Simon Maher and Hard Working Class Heroes and First Music Contact’s Angela Dorgan. Each speaker discussed the effects of digital media on the Irish music industry, how they have been effected and their predictions for the future.  There was a definite buzz in the air as the members of the audience were given the chance to quiz the speakers on their views.

This was followed by an electric set from a pared down but revved up Reader’s Wives, playing favourites such as Sexually Attracted to Myself and Juliet, leaving the crowd cheering for more. Next on the bill was up and coming guitarist Stefan Galt, a definite one to watch for the future with whisperings in the audience of comparisons to Nick Drake. Next up was Mark from the Minutes who delivered a foot stomping set which saw the crowd make its way to the dance floor. The evening was then brought to a close by the talented singer songwriter Hitman Lord.

Speaking on the success of the evening Conor Lynch said, “This is our second year of bringing our members face to face and it’s very exciting to see Connector grow with new members after each event. We’re looking forward to continuing with these successful events.  All the information is on our website www.connector.ie and you can sign up to receive updates and invites for upcoming events”.

Nokia connects with Amhran na Bhfiann !

by Conor on September 18th, 2009

With the All Ireland Football Final on Sunday, this is the time when it can get embarrassing that you don’t know the National Anthem in English, let alone in Irish! Are you one of the many people who stand in the crowd at sports events, miming the Nation’s favorite song because you don’t know the words – Olé Olé is not the National Anthem!

Nokia in conjunction with Gaelchultúr have launched an application where you can learn the words of the National Anthem on your Nokia handset. Logon to store.ovi.com to download this Karaoke style application for free! You can now learn the National Anthem in a fun, funky way with friends and family. The application will teach you the words line by line, by following the highlighted Irish text, while the English translation is featured underneath.

There are lots of ways to access “Amhran na Bhfiann” for free. If your handset is preloaded with the Ovi store application already on your Nokia device, click on it, go to applications and download “Amhran na Bhfiann.” Don’t worry if you don’t have OVI store on your phone, just go to the download folder, refresh the content and you will find the Ovi store application, download and install onto your device. You are now ready to start singing!

As my mother is from Macroom, I have to nail my colours to the mast and shout “Come on the rebels” !!

With less than five days to go, things are shaping up very nicely for the first ever Connector Music Event in the Pod, Harcourt Street this September 16th at 7pm. The evening will kick off with welcoming drinks kindly sponsored by Heineken. The fantastic guest speakers, to discuss the Irish music industry in the digital age, will include Today FM’s Alison Curtis, Phantom FM’s Simon Maher, Pod Promotions Siobhan O’Dowd and Hard Working Class Heroes Angela Dorgan.

This will be followed by live acoustic sets for emerging Irish talent such as Reader’s Wives, The Minutes, Hitman Lord and Stefan Gelt. And then DJ Pete Pamf will take us into the night with some smooth and funky tunes.
